A new beginning, an email arrived in my inbox two weeks ago with an offer I couldn’t refuse. Newtek were offering an upgrade from any previous version of Lightwave to Lightwave [8] for a mere £130.
So two weeks later I’m sitting here all jacked up ready to tackle a new project. What better then PresetCentral v2?! I’m hoping this blog will generate some new interest in a large Lightwave3D community website focused on contributed user content. We still have plenty of fresh ideas that we want to tell you about, so stay tuned…! I’m hoping that Ben Chape will join me here soon and complete the ‘old’ team.
Firstly I need to clear a few things up so everybody is on the same page.
PresetCentral.com, was one of the first websites to host Lightwave3D presets for the community. The reason I say host is because registered users were able to upload their presets, surfaces, objects and tutorials all by themselves. Its fair to say it wav very popular. At launch we made it onto the frontpage of CGChannel.com (never appeared on flay.com for some reason) and our server took a real beating. It always makes me smile when I think about the fact the Brad Peebler and his crew at Luxology started their presets page (now defunct I believe) after us
The hacking of the site, the reason we went off air is because our server hosting the website was hacked and used as a trafficing site for warez. The amount of bandwidth that the hackers used was so substantial that the bill came to over $5000. An amount we simply couldn’t pay. We weren’t to blame as we didn’t look after the server, but that didn’t help us much. It turned out that another person using the server had put his shell account details for the server in a text file and managed to share it with Kazaa, or so we were told (unlikely in my view). It all ended with the hosting company wiping the HDs and cancelling the contract.
It seemed logical to resurrect it and get v2 up and running. Unfortunately reality kicked in as we found ourselves in new jobs without much time to code up a new PresetCentral.com
The Team, without which the project would never have gotton off the ground consisted of Bjorn (Developer), Yan, Samus and Ben Chape (Designer). Thanks guys!
To finish, if you have any good ideas or comments please let us know by emailing us: theteam@presetcentral.com
BTW, I’ll be putting some Amazon ads and Google ads on the site to raise some money for the project. If you can please make use of them
Thanks!
